Gemini V.S. Coinbase

Gemini

  • Advanced trading options.
  • Accepts deposits made using ACH (automated clearing house) in the US.
  • No limits on deposits for individuals or institutional accounts in the US using the Wire Transfer option, important for those interested in large US Dollar Bitcoin/Crypto purchases.
Gemini Fees: Gemini doesn’t charge any fees to deposit. Some fees may be incurred depending on the method and the bank you’re sending money from.

Coinbase

  • Simplified instant buy options, expect Coinbase tends to restrict new accounts to limited daily transactions many times at or under $1000.
  • ACH maximum of $25,000 a day after account is approved, this may take some time.
  • Credit card deposits, but with higher fees.
Coinbase Fees: Coinbase charges a flat fee for all transactions under $200. The precise amount is disclosed when you make a transaction. Alternatively, Coinbase will charge a percentage of the transaction. Whichever is larger is the amount actually paid. For credit or debit card purchases, Coinbase charges 3.99% and for all other buying and selling, they charge 1.49%. Bank transfers are free to deposit with but cost $0.15 to withdraw. Certain countries will have a restriction on which deposit and buy options they can use.

Exchanges V.S. Swap platforms

Exchanges

The lowest rates to swap between coins are on exchanges such as Bittrex, Kraken, Binance and Kucoin as you would be taking full responsibility on executing the swaps between coins paying no middle-man to make the swap for you. Takes a little more practice and time to learn, but well worth it to avoid typical 5%+ fees charged by Swap Platforms.

Swap Platforms

A Swap Platform is in essence a middle-man (in this case an exchange) that will swap one coin into another coins for a fee, typically 5%+ of the total transaction. This is the easy man’s way of buying coins that are a little more changeling to find and purchase because they are not listed on Coinbase or Gemini. Always check Swap Rates between the different exchanges as rates may vary greatly! Also, you will need a FROM and TO account, FROM will be either Gemini or Coinbase and TO account will be your private wallet (Trezor or Ledge Nano S) where you will deposit your newly swapped/purchased coins into.

(Note: All passwords should be written down on a piece of paper and stored in a safe place, not online.)
